I believe this is an old version of what today we call a glamour shot. It's hard to place a date, but at a hunch I'd say pre-1940s.
Since the background is covered, I'd say this probably occurred in a home. Since the ceiling is so high, it's probably pre-suburb.
That's an interesting look on her face, and her hair was probably tied back much of the time.
