The winter solstice happens in about a half hour.
Today marks the height of winter’s power and the wheel’s turn towards spring and eventually summer. It’s a quarter day and a lesser sabbat for many neopagans.
In mythology the Child of Light is reborn to aGoddess Lady God. In Christianity this is the birth of the Messiah. Some Norse pagan traditions celebrate the birth of the winter king symbolized by the rebirth of the sun.
It’s a day of contrasts and promises. Even as winter is at it’s greatest, light is born again.
