Forget the plot, give me the charactersWhy I like strong women in
fiction
This isn't my Thursday posting, this is a
response to my email.
I mentioned the the Diana Tregarde books by Mercedes Lackey in an earlier post. The thing that I find appealing about the Diana Tregarde character is not the world she lives in, but her strength and confidence. The world of Guardians is secondary to that. That was the same appeal that Buffy the Vampire Slayer had for me. I liked the character. Yes there was some eye candy, but the character stuff was more interesting. (True confession time, while I did watch the first few seasons of Charmed, that was all about the eye candy. There was no plot, and there wasn't very much characterization.) It's still hard to find decently written female characters in fantasy and science fiction. Better than it was, but still hard. Too many times the female lead is only there so she can turn to goo at the hands of the male lead, and she's little more a fashion accessory from then on. I really like strong women, especially strong intelligent women. I enjoy meeting them and I enjoy talking with them. It's no wonder I like reading about them too.
