Bit of a meditationLook at the pretty
pictures
Pretty much from birth, I've been fascinated by knotwork and especially Celtic knotwork. I could just picture myself sliding through all the intersections, never stopping, always moving. It's probably one of my earliest mediation techniques, and the first one I could do without spreading out all over the table. When I was trying to be a Christian, I collected crosses. Lots of them, all shapes and sizes. But the ones that "worked" for me, the ones I usually wore, were equal armed wheel crosses, especially if they had that intriguing Celtic knotwork. My first purely "Pagan" symbol was a pewter triskelion not all that different from this one. I remember making a big fuss deciding if the arms were going to turn to the right or the left. Later when I discovered the recreational BDSM scene, I considered it a happy accident even if I never did go much beyond the fringes. But the thing that really tied it together was the first time I saw a Mandlebrot set. This particular one is a Julia set. The amazing thing about fractuals is that no matter how far you zoom in or out, the amount of detail stays relatively the same. Beach or coastline or grain of sand, still an amazing level of complexity. Try thinking about that one while walking a labyrinth. Absolutely mind blowing. Maybe that is why I don't remember the first one I walked in San Francisco all that well. I won't pretend that the ancient symbols have the same meaning today as they did a thousand years ago. This is our own age with our own memes. But I do think that potent symbols can be the key to changing our awareness. All these symbols and a million more besides are really the same thing, just from different perspectives. Oh, the emotions and associations may change over time, but I really think it is how we choose to perceive it.

Pagan philosopher, libertarian, and part-time trouble maker, NeoWayland looks at keeping truths alive despite a wash of nonsense. But don't be surprised when he's doing the "nekkid Pagan guy" thing.
