Occasionally I wandered in where I was not wanted and gave truthful answers.
Sometimes I even did it deliberately. A little disruption now can prevent disaster later.

Beyond patriotism

The earlier versions of this website weren't a blog, it was just really neat pagan stuff that I wanted to share. I was coming off a long time of being militantly solitary and I relished the fellowship I finally allowed myself.

I started blogging because I wanted to show that someone could be a person of faith and passionately interested in politics, even if it wasn't the usual faiths. From what I could see, most American pagan bloggers were progressive. Most American patriotic bloggers were conservative Christian. I didn't entirely understand it at the time, but it seemed to me that patriotism shouldn't be defined by a flag or a piece of paper. It wasn't going to found in a dusty book. It wasn't always going to be found on the battlefield.

I didn't really understand what I was looking for. I didn't realize that faith was a tool. I didn't know that what I had been taught about patriotism was just a reflection.

Then I read Bill Whittle's You Are Not Alone. I started seeing the Old Breed in a lot of places. And if you think Whittle went off on a tangent, you should re-read Albert Jay Nock's Isaiah's Job. I'm pretty sure that the defining trait of the Old Breed is that they don't let others define their virtue.

This had been kicking around in my head for a long time. My grandfather used to talk about people he called good folk. He made it clear that when the chips were down, the good folk would help you get back on your feet. These aren't people you can lead in the traditional sense, but they are the ones that a society depends on. Virtue is what they respect, no matter what the color or creed.

There has been a lot of nonsense written about honor and patriotism over the years. That's what it is, nonsense. Here's what is important. Can people depend on you to do what's right? Not what's right according to a law or scripture, but what is right and makes a better World?

Honor just reflects that. Patriotism is just a shadow of that.

Choose your virtue. Send it out into the World. Make it just a little better today than how you found it.
